“how do i find peace?”
she whispered. her eyes growing wide, filling with fear of the unknown. i remember when her eyes contained wanderlust, how she would set fire to everything around her but would never let herself burn. now they’re much darker, as if every molecule of hope she once clung onto vanished, staining her with eternal doubt. with silence sitting carefully between us, i am unsure of how to respond or how to take her worries of anxiety with my hands and bury them deep so they can never resurface.
“my darling, you see, peace never left.”
her eyes flicker slightly, bringing forth a tear which she violently blinks away.
“see, peace is something you must treasure. it’s always there even when you no longer feel it. it’s carefully hidden, yet patiently waiting. there is peace, there is war and most of the time you will be both simultaneously but that’s how peace works, it’s complicated yet so beautiful, once it’s properly understood.”
walking over, i place my hand in hers, she tightens her grip but doesn’t say anything, she doesn’t have to, not when her eyes do the all the speaking. they’re much brighter than they were before, almost as if my words are slowly but surely restoring her faith.
“darling, peace doesn’t mean a destination where there is no noise, no conflict or retaliation, it means to be in the midst of all those things yet still finding the calmness within your mind and the courage within your heart to continue. so, when your world becomes engulfed by chaos and you begin to lose your way, you must remember to re-introduce yourself to the colours of the sunset, embrace the bedlam and thank the air that surrounds you. see, once you create a safe place within yourself, there will be no need to search for peace, for peace will bring itself to you.”
she stares into me, her eyes now filling with light and a burning desire to start again.
nothing warmed my heart more than she did.
