racism, part two - closing thoughts.
let’s take this back in time.
remember rosa parks was held accountable for standing up for what’s right.
they stripped her of her dignity, made her hide her face in shame,
yet she refused to succumb to their prejudice intentions and heinous ways.
proud of her colour, proud of her race, determined not to suffer such disgrace.
say her name and say it loud, she paved a way of freedom for us that day.
next, we had martin luther king and malcom x stand on stage,
heads held high as they delivered heartfelt speeches in their calls for change.
but racism got ahold of them soon, never were they safe from the vengeance that grew.
they were singled out and ridiculed, made to believe they were criminals too.
they assassinated one brother and then assassinated the other one too.
“you can kill the dreamer, but you can’t kill the dream”
i shall say this continuously until my face is blue.
here i am 50 years later with same cause of action for you.
same fighting words on my tongue and the same aching pain in my chest,
these feelings of resentment and the anger i have festered just will not rest.
let’s talk about gentrification in today’s society next.
they’ll yell about inclusion and diversity while they hold our history by the throat.
they’ll tear it apart and build over it, we’ll cry and complain but they’re over it.
surely it’s just sheer ignorance, but who are we to call them out for this?
they’ll just continue to blind the innocent and damage our premises
while we are made to question what the hell freedom actually is.
yes i am pointing blame, yes white supremacy is in inflation today.
post a black square on your social media, hashtag it “blm” and call it a day,
type “free palestine” from behind a screen as you maliciously look the other way.
no, it doesn’t work that way, just put your lack of education away.
it was never our jobs to teach you about valuing religion and race.
we can’t make you feel the trauma we face or the hateful words we must digest,
you won’t ever know how bitter they taste, you’ll just bury your head instead.
pretend you just don’t see it or hear it today but today is everyday for us.
i refuse to keep my mouth shut so yes i’ll continue to kick up a fuss,
yes i’ll continue to scream from my lungs until our freedom is peacefully sung
and you’ve altered these distorted, backward narratives you’ve made for us.
listen, are you uncomfortable enough? i guess my work here is done.
